Kalkoenbos, Belbos, Gansies, Unwele and Insiswa (Zulu), Musa-Pelo,
Motlepelo and Phethola (Sotho).
It has a long history of use by all cultures in Southern Africa,
because of its efficacy as a safe tonic for diverse health
conditions. It helps the body to mobilize its own resources to cope
with diverse physical and mental stresses. It is known by many as a
powerful blood-purifier or all purpose tonic.
A three month safety study done on Sutherlandia Frutescens by the
Medical Council of South Africa has shown that it is safe and
non-toxic within the parameters of the study.
It has a history of use as a promising tonic, going back more than
100 years at least. There are anecdotal indications that it is of
value to people living with AIDS. It enhances the well-being,
increases appetite, body mass and tolerance for exercise. No adverse
effects have been reported to date.
Sutherlandia frutescens reduces the incidence of the wasting
syndrome (extreme loss of body weight) associated with AIDS, cancer
and tuberculosis. It also increases the physical strength and
endurance and also decreases the incidence of depression that
usually accompanies the diseases HIV/AIDS, cancer and tuberculosis.
Also in the treatment of depression, it has been use with great
success for hundreds of years by numerous cultures. The key

depression, are GABA, L-asparagine and L-canavanine.
There is preliminary evidence that Sutherlandia has a direct

The substance L-canavanine in Sutherlandia is known for its
anti-cancer, anti-viral and anti-microbial activities. Improvements
in CD4 counts and decreases in the viral load in AIDS patients
taking Sutherlandia have also been reported by clinicians.
L-canavanine also has anti-inflammatory properties and is used in a
gel form for numerous skin conditions like boils, sores, abrasions,
minor burns, insect bites and eczema.
